The first true application for streamlining the quality control process for desktop files was Markzware Software’s landmark FlightCheck. Released in 1995, FlightCheck quickly became the industry standard for pre-flighting — such a standard in electronic prepress that the word “flightcheck” has become synonymous with pre-flighting.

The FlightCheck process begins with Ground Controls, where users designate what file attributes FlightCheck should audit, such as Color, Image Type, Fonts, and Page Size. Once pre-flighting is completed, FlightCheck provides a detailed report on the file and its specifications, including possible output problems based on users’ Ground Control settings — and how to fix them.

Ground Controls can also be customized for service providers to examine files based upon their equipment and file requirements. These custom settings can then be saved and distributed to clients to further streamline file checking and to ensure customer files meet vital specifications.
