COMPANY: Pendell Printing (Division of Quebecor World)
Midland,
Michigan
TYPE OF COMPANY: Commercial
Printer
COMPANY PROFILE: Pendell Printing a $60 million web and sheet fed printer serves the needs of 200 national client and distribution based publication titles. The Pendell family founded Pendell in 1953. In 1985 Quebecor, Inc. of Montreal, Canada acquired controlling interests of Pendell Printing, and it was at this time that they converted to printing primarily publications with run lengths between 5-50,000. There are 450 employees working in the 120, 000 square foot printing facility. This company prints twelve of the top graphic arts, printing and paper industry publications. Since their move into the electronic prepress arena in 1991, "one stop full service" four-color printing is now available at Pendell.
INITIAL PREPRESS SITUATION:
Prior to producing composite four-color separated pages in-house,
Pendell had been working with black and white imagesetters. In-house
film prep was conventional, using Hell scanners and manual stripping.
CLIENT ISSUES:
- Configuration consulting
- Production back-up
- High productivity
- Technical support
- Training of printing sales staff
CHANGE IN PREPRESS SITUATION:
As of 1992, All Systems Integration has installed 7 nonproprietary
workstations, an Optronics ColorSetter and ColorGetter, fiber optic
networking, and Iris digital proofing into Pendell's internal prepress
department. Because of Pendell's ability to accept PostScript based
pages, they were able to substantially increase their market penetration
for printing as well as prepress services.
