ASI's Case Studies
COMPANY: Lazarus Department Stores
Headquartered
in Cincinnati, Ohio
( A
Division of Federated/Allied Stores)
TYPE OF COMPANY: Retailer
COMPANY PROFILE: Lazarus
is a Midwestern based retailer with 52 store locations and nearly
$1 Billion in annual sales. Lazarus is a division of Federated Department
Stores - the single largest North American retailer.
INITIAL PREPRESS SITUATION:
All art was prepared conventionally on art boards by an in-house
design staff of 30. Separations were provided by the printer for
a weekly magazine advertising vehicle that ranged from 24 to 96
4-color pages per week. In addition, all newspaper advertising (ROP)
and direct mail advertising were prepared the same way.
CLIENT ISSUES:
- Retraining and training personnel
- Hardware and software system maintenance and training
- Workflow control
- Ease of adaptability to new system
- Return on investment
- Internal control of production
- Technical support
- Periodic on-site training support
- Back-up for production overflow
CHANGE IN PREPRESS SITUATION:
All Systems Integration installed 35 Macintosh workstations and
other software and hardware to meet the customers desire for an
internal nonproprietary electronic prepress system. Lazarus uses
their custom designed electronic prepress system to internally produce
weekly 4 color films for their catalogs and other marketing pieces.
After just 8 months of support and training Lazarus is now producing
all of their own work internally. Bringing electronic prepress in-house
has saved Lazarus over $1 million in prepress separation costs in
the first year. Their return on investment was approximately 14
months.
